Abstract

Purpose: This research is to determine self-reflection contents on clinical learning activity for nursing students.

Methods: The data was collected from self-reflection diaries written by 20 nursing students in a college. The qualitative content analysis of reflective diary was undertaken in order to obtain an understanding of reflection contents on clinical learning activity. Analyzing each diary, the collected data was thematically categorized.

Results: The main theme was ¡®struggle to get more learning on positive attitude¡¯. The four sub-themes and eight condensed meaning units were categorized. The four sub-themes were searching learning opportunities¡¯, ¡®feeling on familiar or unfamiliar things¡¯, ¡®awareness of professional nursing¡¯, and ¡®new perspective on personal relationships¡¯. Eight condensed meaning units were¡®searching opportunities for doing and observation¡¯, ¡®searching opportunities to link knowledge into practice¡¯, ¡®confidence on familiar procedure or situation¡¯, ¡®be embarrassed to unfamiliar procedure or situation¡¯, ¡®being aware of nurse¡¯, ¡®being a nurse¡¯, ¡®rethinking of personal relationships¡¯, and ¡®understanding in others aspects¡¯.

Conclusion: Reflections practice can help to entering real nurses world for nursing students. The explored self-reflection contents can be applied in development of teaching and learning strategies in clinical setting.
